Platinum Games’ Xbox One/Windows 10 PC Exclusive Scalebound has been cancelled, Microsoft has confirmed.
Earlier today, Kotaku reported that the game was in “development hell“, suggesting that Scalebound, which is being developed by Resident Evil 2, Bayonetta‘s director Hideki Kamiya, would in all likelihood be cancelled.
According to EuroGamer.net, multiple sources contacted the publication to confirm that developer Platinum Games had indeed parted ways with publisher Microsoft Studios, with development for Scalebound, an action RPG grinding to a halt.
A Microsoft spokesperson has since released a statement on the games official website confirming Scalebound‘s cancellation:
“Today, I have a difficult announcement to share that affects our fans, Microsoft Studios team and a valued partner. After careful deliberation, we have come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. This decision was not made lightly. At Microsoft, we remain committed to making Xbox and Windows 10 the best places to play games, and look forward to bringing “Halo Wars 2”, “Crackdown 3”, “State of Decay 2”, “Sea of Thieves” and other great experiences to our fans..”
The news of Scalebound‘s cancellation is undoubtedly a big blow to the start of Xbox’s plans for 2017, with a shortage of new blockbuster new IP’s and no concrete release date for the highly anticipated Crackdown 3. It remains to be seen if Platinum Games decide to pick up Scalebound again at a later date.
Platinum Games is currently developing PS4 console Exclusive, NieR Automata, which is scheduled to release February 23rd.
