Studio MDHR’s 2D platformer Cuphead is tough, really tough…
So much has been made of its difficulty, that it’s easy to see why the fantastic 1930’s styled platformer would draw comparisons with FromSoftware’s incredibly tough and oh-so unforgiving Dark Souls series.
Though the genres, style and gameplay of both titles couldn’t be farther apart, the brutal theme of each game work surprisingly well together, as eluded to by YouTube channel 64 Bits. The channel, which specialises in parodying video games, has come up with something pretty special for their latest video as the theme of Dark Souls transcends 2D form to meet the art and sound style of Cuphead with incredible results.
The video blends the gothic landscape and daunting boss fights of the Dark Souls series with the wacky animation theme and jazzy soundtrack of Cuphead seamlessly. Cupsouls even pays homage to Dark Souls iconic death screen with the words ‘You Died’ making an appearance at the video’s conclusion.
From the looks of it, 64 Bits have created something a bit special. Heck, even Dark Souls enthusiast and YouTuber VaatiVidya commended the video saying: “Incredible work! I love how well you translated boss mechanics from 3d > 2d. You can tell a lot of care and effort went into this. Instant sub.”
High praise indeed.
